Ask every school the same questions and request the answers in writing. You will learn more from the gaps between the quote, schedule, and test plan than from a general campus tour.

Questions to ask a CDL school about registration

  1. Is this exact location listed for my training?

Match the street address, CDL class or endorsement, theory or behind-the-wheel delivery, and public or private enrollment status.

  2. Which federal and state requirements will this course satisfy?

Name the state where you will test and obtain the CDL. Ask the school to identify any state hours, authorization, or testing rule beyond ELDT.

  3. Can I enroll in only the training piece I need?

If theory is already complete, ask whether the provider accepts behind-the-wheel-only students and whether one provider will deliver both range and road training.

Questions to ask about CDL training time and equipment

  1. When is the next confirmed start, and what is the attendance policy?

Ask for class days, daily hours, expected end date, holidays, make-up rules, and what happens after an absence.

  2. How are range and public-road turns assigned?

Request the number of students sharing a truck, how observation time is counted, and how instructors decide that you are proficient.

  3. Which truck will I use for the skills test?

Confirm the CDL group, fifth-wheel connection for Class A, air-brake equipment, and manual or automatic transmission.

Questions to ask a CDL school about cost and refunds

  1. What is the complete required price for my start date?

Ask for tuition, registration, books, supplies, permit and licensing items, screening, test-vehicle use, and every mandatory school fee.

  2. What can create an extra charge?

Ask about extra driving practice, a vehicle change, missed classes, schedule transfers, retests, and extending beyond the planned end date.

  3. What happens if I cancel, withdraw, or do not pass?

Read the deposit, cancellation, refund, financing, and school-closure terms. Keep the version tied to your enrollment date.

Questions to ask about CDL testing and employer contracts

  1. Who schedules the skills test and supplies the truck?

Confirm the testing agency, expected location, appointment process, vehicle fee, cancellation rule, and what you must bring.

  2. When will you submit my ELDT completion?

The federal deadline is midnight of the second business day after completion. Ask how the school corrects a record that contains an error.

  3. What do I owe if employment ends early?

For employer-paid training, read the required work period, repayment calculation, deductions, route or location commitment, and events that trigger a balance.
